Be the Light

I think often times when we read Matthew 5:14-16 we can get a lot from it. Jesus says “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Jesus tells us that we are the light of the world. I find it interesting that later on in Matthew 6:22 that the eye is the lamp of your body and if your eyes are good then your whole body will be full of light. I connected these two together because the Bible also tells us to rightfully divide the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

Jesus tells us that as long as we stay fixed on Him that He is the light - He is the way, the truth, and the life - then our eyes which are the lamp to the body bring light into us and to those around us. We are called to be the light because Jesus says YOU ARE which means it is already established. We are lights because we have Jesus Christ - who is all light - living in us. We are led into all truth when we stay close to God and in His Word daily. We are feeding ourselves the Word of God which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105)- so it makes sense why Jesus tells us that we are the light when we listen to Him and His Word. We cannot be hidden because the truth is within us as the Holy Spirit leads us into all truth (John 16:13). We are the difference makers. We are the ones that bring light into this dark world. We bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who were once in the dark and can now live in the light if they choose to receive it. We are carriers of light.

It’s amazing that our good deeds towards others shine. When we walk in love and righteousness, people take notice of that because that’s not what the world sees on a daily basis. We can walk into a room and the atmosphere could change because of Whose in us, and wherever we go, His presence goes as well. Be the light. Bring the Gospel to those who need to hear it. Let your good deeds towards others shine. Be the difference-maker.
